I have always felt Indian society is uniquely blighted because of the combination of caste and colonialism. That was, of course, my Indo-centrism. I just finished reading Disgrace by JM Coetzee and boy, oh boy--South African society seems as messed up as India. The only difference is it feels to me that South Africa has started to reckon with its colonial, white-settler past. The reckoning is messy and ugly but at least there is some awareness that its present social ills stem from its past. In India, that reckoning has not started as far as I know.
