What is the best strategy to deal with climate deniers bent on branding climate advocates as hypocrites? Is trying to change one's behaviour to blunt their criticism like shooting at a moving goalpost? For instance, if you stop flying, they will find some other cudgel to beat you up with. Since it is almost impossible to have a zero carbon footprint in the world as it exists today, you are bound to lose.
But, I do believe the battle to save the world and for a more just society will require middle and upper classes, especially in the developed world, to accept a substantial fall in their existing quality of life. And, one needs to lead by example. For instance, I don't think Harry and Meghan can credibly call for people to fly less by commercial airlines when they are not prepared to give up on their use of private jets.
