Why is stalking so distressing? I think because it is a case of someone you don't want in your life forcing their way into it. Someone who either makes you feel unsafe or unsound or who brings up unpleasant memories. And someone whom you feel you should have the choice not to have in your life. It makes you feel powerless and weak because it is so easy for someone to rock the boat of your life with their mere presence. There is also the realisation that stalking is irrational because you have already indicated that you want nothing to do with that person and, at least from your perspective, that person should have no expectations that you will ever engage with him or her. If the person is irrational it is really difficult to predict how the person will respond to a given situation. There is no second-guessing crazy, which makes the whole experience even more unnerving. It is difficult for someone who hasn't been stalked to imagine what it feels like, especially when there are no physical threats.
