A five-day holiday looms before me. To most people, that would be welcome but for me it isn't. I don't really have a life outside my PhD and a five-holiday means no access to the PhD office, having to cook lunch as the cafeteria will be closed and a general disruption to my routine. Ordinarily, I prefer not to be in Bristol during such times. I spent the last two Christmases in England with my aunt in Brighton. This time I staying put in Bristol, partly because I just got back from India last week and partly as an experiment. Can I enjoy staying in Bristol even when I don't have access to the university? Can I be by myself without the crutch of university life?
